Many restaurants and cafes keep their menu in Square. They often want that menu on their own website too, with live prices and photos. But they do not want online ordering or online payments.
This question comes up again and again in the Square Seller Community. I had the same problem at my own takeout shop. Here are the ways I know of.
1. Use Square Online and turn off online ordering
You can build a site with Square Online and then turn off "Accept online orders". Your items, prices and photos stay on the site, but customers cannot order.
The catch: according to answers in the Community, visitors see a message that your store is not accepting orders, and the item options (modifiers) are not shown. And this only works if your website is a Square Online site.
2. Make a plain information page
You can type your menu into a normal page on any website, or upload a PDF. It works anywhere.
The catch: it does not stay in sync with Square. Every time you change a price or an item, you have to change the page too.
3. If your website is WordPress: use a plugin
I built Tokurabo Takeout Menu for Square for this. It is free on WordPress.org.
- It shows the menus you choose in Square, with photos, prices, price variations and options
- It syncs with Square every hour. Change something in Square, and your website follows
- It only shows your menu. There is no cart and no online payment
- It does not need WooCommerce
- It only reads your Square data. It never changes anything in your Square account
Why I built it
I am a vegetable farmer, and I run a small takeout shop that cooks with what we grow. Our menu is in Square. I did not want to type it again on our website every time it changed, so I made our site read it from Square.
Then I turned that into a plugin, so other small shops can do the same.
For web designers
If you build sites for restaurants or cafes that use Square, you only need to set the plugin up once. After that, the owner changes the menu in Square and the website follows. No more "can you update the menu?" emails. Colors and fonts come from the theme, and you can turn off the plugin styles to use your own CSS.
